WHO IS IT FOR?

This course is aimed specifically at newly appointed organisers and we would advise that new organisers complete this course in their first year of appointment. The course may also be suitable for more experienced organisers who are not familiar with modern organising techniques.

AIMS

  • To understand the need for unions to grow and build power.
  • To introduce new organisers to the organising frameworks.
  • To understand the industrial relations framework organisers operate in.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the historical context of unions in Australia and the need for growth;
  • Understand the industrial relations framework and how to operate in it in a way which promotes union growth;
  • Become familiar with the organising frameworks and practive some of the skills involved in identifying issues, developing activists, mapping the workplace and holding one on one conversations;
  • Understand the importance of developing networks such as workplace organising committees and developing an agenda for these networks;
  • Understand the principles of negotiation and learn how to apply them to promote union growth;
  • Conduct a SWOT analysis

COURSE DURATION

Six Days (split)

Fundamentals of Organising is delivered in two three day stages with a four-six week gap in between the two stages. Participants are given an organising project to complete in between the two stages.
