The seventh annual OHS Representatives Conference, “OHS in Victoria - Unfinished Business” is being held on Wednesday October 24 at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, during Victoria's OHS Week. The conference will look at key issues OHS issues in Australia today:
- The 2004 OHS Act: Two years after the introduction of the new OHS Act, an administrative review of the Victorian OHS Act will start. What difference has the new Act made? Are there any unintended problems with it? What remains as ‘unfinished business’?
- The new consolidated OHS Regulations came into effect on July 1 this year. Are these working as well as they could? Is there anything missing or unfinished?
- 'Harmonisation’ – what is it? What does it mean? What might it mean?
- What's happening with the ACTU Charter of rights for OHS, compensation and rehabilitation?

You’ll hear from WorkSafe on what it has been doing and there will be a range of other speakers.
A range of workshops will offered in the afternoon, which you book into on the day – or your union may be running a workshop for you to join.
As in previous years, the VTHC has gained approval for the Seminar from the VWA under the OHS Act [Section 69(1)(d)(ii)].
This means that employers must allow elected OHS representatives to attend the Seminar on paid time. Again this year it is being sponsored by WorkSafe Victoria, and the Victorian Trades Hall Council. Consequently, there are no course fees associated with attendance. However, you must give your employer at least 14 days' notice of your intention to attend. The earlier you notify your employer the better... that way if there are any problems they can be sorted out well before the seminar.
