In 2009, ACTU Member Connect and Members Equity Bank were pleased to present union members with TWO footy tipping competitions for both AFL and NRL supporters. This brought the total prize pool for 2009 to $2000!

The winner of our ACTU/ME AFL tipping competition is CPSU/CSA member Phillip Hawks from WA. As the highest overall tipper in the competition at the end of Round 22, Phillip won a $1,000 Members Equity Bank InterestME Savings Account. ACTU Member Connect asked Phillip how he came to join our competition and he told us that he found it whilst googling for tipping comps after another tipping comp he’d been in stopped running. And his secret for tipping so well? Phillip usually looks at the teams’ selections, ins and outs, to see which is the best team on the day and then tries to pick impartially. We also asked Phillip which AFL team he follows and he told us that he ‘first started following the Saints when at primary school friends went to Melbourne and were going to bring me and my brother VFL team jumpers back. My brother wanted a Hawthorn jumper because of our name but not wanting the same I asked for any other team and got a St Kilda jumper. So from then on if asked who I supported in VFL I said St Kilda!’ When asked who he thinks will the win the AFL Grand Final, Phillip says ‘Naturally I think the Saints will win!’ Phillip and his wife are planning a holiday with their winnings. Excellent tipping, Phillip, enjoy the finals and GO THE MIGHTY SAINTS!
NRL - 2009 COMPETITION RESULTS

The winner of our ACTU/ME NRL tipping competition is Mark Schier, NTEU member from Victoria. As the highest overall tipper in the competition at the end of Round 26, Mark has won a $1,000 Members Equity Bank InterestME Savings Account. When asked how he came to join in the NRL tipping comp, Mark told us he joined in 2008, as he was already doing the AFL comp and thought that the NRL would be fun too. ACTU Member Connect also asked Mark what his secret was when it came to tipping winners and his response was that he looks at the teams; their current place and then he leaves it to the ‘secret mix of form and luck (probably more luck)’! When asked which NRL team he follows, Mark said, ‘Melbourne Storm, as they are a local team, and it is nice to take on some of the big guns in NSW and QLD!’ Mark also thinks the Storm has a chance of winning the Grand Final and has plans for buying a replacement computer for home with his winnings from ME Bank. Well done, Mark and enjoy the footy finals!
