We are living through stressful times. For some, increased financial and work-related pressure may lead to depression, substance abuse or other mental health problems. It’s not unusual and it’s not something to be ashamed of.
According to Lifeline Australia, workplace stress adversely affects around 72% of Australians. More than ever, managing this stress is important to emotional, physical and social wellbeing. This is just one of the reasons why a group of concerned industry super funds established SuperFriend – the Industry Funds Forum Mental Health Foundation. SuperFriend is a nation-wide initiative aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of industry superannuation fund members.
Developed through a partnership of industry superannuation funds concerned about member health, SuperFriend brings together partners from the superannuation funds, insurers and mental health organisations to offer resources that assist members with seeking early help.
It is important to recognise when you are stressed and to understand the underlying causes. Once you’ve assessed the situation you can take steps to improve your emotional wellbeing, such as:
- Talk to someone you trust – a family member, friend or colleague
- Let your workplace or boss know that you are feeling stressed and help them to understand why.
- Look after your physical health – exercise and a balanced diet will improve your emotional wellbeing
- Find a balance – participate in activities you enjoy outside of work, and make time for friends and family
- Avoid taking on more than you can manage or over committing yourself
- If you feel your stress levels peaking step away and take some time out in a quiet place to breathe and refocus
- Seek help – talk to your GP, or a counsellor or contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
The SuperFriend website brings together the resources of a wide range of health organisations and provides information and advice covering:
- Simple and effective ways to improve physical and mental wellbeing
- Achieving a wholesome work/life balance
- Detecting the symptoms of common mental and emotional problems
- Retrenchment support information
- Reaching out for and obtaining help.
